The past couple of months have been quite hectic, to say the least. I went back to Youtube, I took on new roles, and I accepted more freelance work. It’s been rewarding but I’m not gonna lie – it really did a number on my stress levels. So, despite my skin getting better over the summer, I experienced breakouts and hives anew. At some points, I was rather dehydrated and was running on little sleep that it started showing on my skin. So an invitation to the Grand Hyatt Berlin‘s Club Olympus was much more than welcome.
It’s hardly my first time coming to the Grand Hyatt here in Berlin. Having covered the Berlinale before for Forbes and Rappler, I’ve spent some time in the hotel doing press registrations and attending press conferences. So the hotel really does have a special place in my heart. I met Wes Anderson and Tilda Swinton in their premises for the first time and those instances definitely make it to my list of memorable times in Berlin.
I’ve always seen the hotel buzzing with harried members of the press and Berlinale organisers. So, one sunny autumn day, I got the chance to see the place in a varied light to create different memory. Something that’s a lot more relaxing.
Club Olympus Spa
The moment I entered the Grand Hyatt, I was ushered to a dedicated lift that would bring me to the 8th floor, where the spa is located. The place had an air of exclusivity yet it wasn’t intimidating.
Looking around the place, one can tell that the Grand Hyatt, as well as its spa, is not one of the newer hotels in the city. And sometimes, there’s comfort in that. The hotel was first opened in 1998 but thankfully, it’s maintained pretty well. The space is vast and has lots of natural light. This, thanks to large windows surrounding the area. Some, even open up to the rooftop terrace which is rather popular for the day spa visitors during the summer.
The indoor pool is great for a couple of laps and even just to enjoy the feeling of being in the water. A gym, a Finnish sauna, Turkish steam bath, and a solarium round up the facilities. I must admit, however, that the treatment rooms were the most interesting for me at that time.
A much needed facial
I was scheduled to have 90 minutes of pure bliss through the Sublime Skin Deluxe Fit Face Treatment. However, upon meeting my aesthetician for the day, I was told my skin was too sensitive for the treatment. I came with hives and some roughness that were definitely caused by stress.
I was told that I needed something gentler that day and this is something I appreciate. It showed that my aesthetician knew what she was doing and what was best for my skin at that time. I went through some gentle cleansing and a calming massage. They were soothing to my skin and helped me relax all over.
She also used the detox mask on my skin that helped to deep clean my skin. I must say, the most satisfying part of the treatment was definitely when she peeled off my skin. The detox mask enriched with chlorella and plant-based charcoal. Charcoal, as a skincare ingredient, is extremely helpful in drawing out impurities from underneath the skin’s surface.
Most of the products used for treatments at Club Olympus come from /skin regimen/. The plant-based, sustainable skincare brand comes from Italian group Davines. If you’ve been with me since my KL days, you’ll know that I’m a fan of this company and it started with their haircare range.
My aesthetician was so thorough it what she does that she even offered to clear out my excess brows using a tweezer. Something I was very happy to say yes to. I’m very particular about keeping my brows’ natural shape so she only cleared the tiny hairs that were not where they were supposed to be.
Relax right at the heart of Berlin
The Grand Hyatt Hotel is located in the Potsdamer Platz area, making it extremely accessible. The central location is the reason for yet another advantage – the view from Club Olympus. From the spa, you can easily see the Berliner Philharmonie.
The terrace also gets a generous amount of sunlight, perfect for getting a tan or just soaking up some vitamin D.
Swim, dine, and work out
Should you feel rather famished after a treatment, snacks are available right at the spa. They have a special room where you can have a bite to eat. You can also order healthy bowls if you want a little more energy to power through the day.
One of my favourite things about the hotel is their pool, surrounded by glass windows. Who says swimming in winter is boring? It’s so easy to pretend that you’re still outside with all the natural light coming in.
And of course, the place won’t be complete without a gym. Should you wish to work up a sweat before a treatment or a relaxing time at the sauna, there’s always that option.
A day ticket at Club Olympus which allows you to use their facilities cost EUR70. Massages start at EUR68 and facials at EUR98. A good deal is if you get day spa packages which include a day ticket and a treatment. Say, for EUR195, you get a day ticket worth EUR70 and a 60-minute ritual massage as well as a 60-minute essential facial. For other packages, you can check their offerings in this link.
If you’re currently living in Berlin, you can also consider just signing up for a membership with the spa.
That concludes my sharing of my visit to Club Olympus. It truly was a relaxing day. My appointment ended by lunchtime but I wasn’t that hungry yet. So, I walked over to the Potsdamer Arkaden mall (just across the hotel) for a vegan doughnut at Brammibal’s. Apparently, one can have it all – sometimes.
