The best thing about moving into a new apartment is always that fresh start. Along with it comes the chance to decorate your new space. We move every couple of years due to my husband’s job and while moving is always stressful, decorating our new home is always something I look forward to. There’s something so exciting about looking for new places to get your decor in your new city. Here in Berlin, there’s no shortage of such stores – both online and offline – but one of my favourites has got to be Maisons du Monde.
The French furniture company has some of the prettiest items for your home. When we arrived in Berlin back in April of 2017, they didn’t have a physical store in the city but was readily available online. From their sofas to their dinnerware and down to their pastel collections, I just couldn’t get enough of looking through their site. I also made a couple of orders for our own home.
So, imagine my excitement when I found out they were opening their own brick and mortar establishment right here in Berlin. I was over the moon! This was back in December and it got pretty busy for us (plus we had some travelling to do( so I couldn’t visit right away. This made me so bummed. Right after we got back in January, I made sure to pay the store a visit.
The store is located inside the Boulevard Berlin shopping mall in Steglitz, along Schloßstraße. It’s the brand’s 10th store in Germany and at 1100 square metres, it takes up a huge chunk of the mall’s first floor.
I’ve been to their Barcelona branch last year and it was a truly enjoyable part of our trip. This, even though I couldn’t bring back a lot of stuff from the store due to luggage limits on the plane. Having a branch in Berlin takes the pressure out of shopping in a Maisons du Monde branch whenever we’re in a city that has it. I could easily spend hours just browsing through their collections.
Shopping online is also something I haven’t fully embraced. I like personally seeing and touching an item before I purchase it. I want to make sure it’s well made and that the colour and size is just perfect.
There’s also something special about walking into a store and being surrounded by choices. While I would buy something online, I only do it when the store is not easily accessible to me. Call me old-school but that just how I am.
Aside from big furniture, I love their decor as well as their kitchen and dinnerware.
They also have mats, storage solutions, and even items for your pet. It’s everything a home needs to look pretty – all under one roof.
Speaking of pets, Juancho enjoyed his time at Maisons du Monde because of the friendly staff. We had his buggy with us that day because we weren’t sure if dogs were allowed to walk through Boulevard Berlin. Schloßstraße’s sidewalks are also pretty narrow. Wouldn’t want Juancho to get stepped on once the hordes of shoppers arrive.
Is it worth it?
Maisons du Monde actually has items at varying price points. Big pieces of furniture can cost you a couple of hundred euros to a thousand and a little more. Decor as well as kitchen and tableware range from a couple of euros up to the double digits. One of the lamps I fell in love with was at EUR69 and I actually bought a tea box that was on sale for EUR9,99. It’s pretty affordable even if I compare it to furniture prices back in Manila and Kuala Lumpur. Oh, and especially if you think of the quality (great for the price) and design.
The prices are also pretty near to IKEA. I was talking to a friend recently and our conversation summed it up pretty well. For basic, minimalist pieces and colours, go to IKEA. For pieces that are on trend design-wise and if you’re looking to spice up and add character to your home without going over budget, go to Maisons du Monde.
Hope the photos were able to give you an idea on what you can find there! Maisons du Monde also has branches in Bochum, Braunschweig, Dortmund, Dresden, Essen, Koblenz, Leipzig, Mannheim und München-Eching.
