I’m a city girl through and through. People who know me personally can attest to that. I just love the hustle and bustle – the excitement and energy a big city generates. However, I won’t deny that it can get pretty taxing sometimes. The excitement and physical strain of daily living can actually wear you down. Living in Berlin for over a year now, I find that even though this city is not as busy as Manila or Kuala Lumpur, the constant moving around that I do (even in awful weather) can still be exhausting. What really saves the day for me, though, is a spot of relaxation within my week – either at home or at a spa. Germany is big on spa culture and I’ve written about it before. This time, I’ll be telling you about another spa that I recently visited that has left a really good impression with me: SpaSphere.
Location, location, location
Straddling Prenzlauer Berg and Friedrichshain, SpaSphere is located inside Vienna House Andel’s in Berlin. The Landsberger Allee S-bahn and tram stations are right in front.
It’s an easy commute if, like me, you prefer to take public transport. If you prefer to bring your car, there’s also ample parking right under the hotel. In fact, ample is an understatement. They have a lot of parking space.
Arriving at SpaSphere, you’ll instantly get a warm and relaxing feeling because of the ambience. It’s like an oasis of calm right in the middle of buzzing Berlin. You don’t hear the outside world and you can just focus on the sound of water from the pool, the warm lighting, and the friendly people you meet at the counter.
SpaSphere
The 550 square metre space has a Finnish and Bio sauna, a whirlpool, and a gym, and relaxation areas. If you want to use the facilities, get there early. In fact, make it over an hour before your schedule with your therapist so you have enough time.
Usually, if you get a body or facial treatment, working out after or going in the sauna would be counterproductive so better try things out before. It would be such a shame not to since that whirlpool is so inviting – especially after a workout. Some time at the sauna can also relax your muscles after a long walk outside in the cold and prevent you from getting sick. With this weather settling in, we’d all be needing it.
As for the price, it’s definitely one of the affordable hotel spas I’ve seen in the city. They also have treatments that don’t last for too long which is perfect for the traveller who’s here for business and doesn’t have too much time to spare.
Magic Hands
At the heart of every amazing treatment lies a therapist with magical hands. For SpaSphere, those hands belong to a friendly lady by the name of Silva. She came highly recommended by my friend Gil so I knew I had to meet her.
After a bit of small talk (yes, some Germans actually engage in it), I was offered some tea and a warm towel. Then, I popped into the changing rooms for a quick shower before slipping into a fluffy robe and slippers.
Silva ushered me into the treatment room where she told me about what we’ll be doing that day. A treatment they appropriately called Velvet & Silk Special.
Why?
Because that’s how my skin would feel like after the whole thing. I was definitely excited. I slipped into the bed and Silva began with a body scrub. Using products from French brand Thalgo, she worked her hands in a way that felt like a light massage. It was so relaxing, especially when she was doing my back.
After the scrub, I was wrapped in blankets and even got to take a bit of a nap before I was asked to shower and rinse off the product left on my body. When I got back on the massage table, Silva asked me to feel my skin and let me tell you – it felt as smooth and bouncy as that of a six-month-old baby.
Next, Silva used Thalgo Cold Cream Marine to give me a heavenly massage from top to toe. Silva kneaded my muscles lightly, releasing tension. It felt rejuvenating, especially with the cream that felt so hydrating and non-sticky. Thalgo is a brand that harnesses algae and active marine ingredients for their skincare products. We all know that algae have the ability to provide our skin cells with energy and oxygen to increase elasticity. As someone with desert-dry(read: dehydrated) skin, this is really up my alley.
Managing Stress
After the treatment, I also got to spend time in the relaxation room and got some reading done. All in all, that afternoon at SpaSphere was really a welcomed treat.
Aside from my crazy work schedule, I was about to embark on a 10-day road trip with visiting relatives which will culminate at my mother’s wedding in Amsterdam. Being cooped up in a car for long hours was never for me but because I was able to prepare well for the upcoming stress, I was able to enjoy the trip despite the exhaustion it came with. In fact, I expected that I would be more tired than how I actually felt.
A friend who works in wellness often tells me that stress from external factors can easily be managed by taking time for yourself and giving your space to relax. That day at SpaSphere was definitely one of those and I can’t wait to be back.
