I first found myself in Vienna House Andel’s during a Diplommatischer Stammtisch event – a monthly gathering for diplomats and their spouses here in Berlin to help us network and make friends. During the first visit, I noticed that the hotel has so much to offer – especially for those travelling to Berlin for business.

The hotel doesn’t need to make much effort to impress. I say this as someone who comes from Asia where hotels tend to be ginormous and grand. From its sheer size, the modern lobby where there’s an Italian APE converted into a coffee bar, the number of rooms, the quality of the restaurants and the views. If you’re planning on holding a business conference or a trade fair, you can even do it all under one roof.

I was lucky enough to be given a lovely and truly informative tour of the place a little over a week ago by Gil who handles Vienna House Andel’s PR. I’d like to share what I learned and some photos with you. If you’re on this page, you’re probably looking for a hotel in Berlin as well as some travel tips so let me make it worth your while.

Skybar

Let’s start off with the place that, after one look, I knew was going to be my favourite. The Skybar offers master-crafted cocktails in a setting that’s straight out of your Instagram dreams. It’s edgy but comfortable at the same time. A place that feels luxe but in true Berlin-fashion, lets you come as you are.

The bar also offers a stunning view of the city. The former East Berlin can still be felt through the wide roads to the neighbouring buildings’ architecture.

Pro Tip: Come (really) early or book this beautiful corner in advance if you’re having a special get together with about five to six friends. It’s at the far corner of the bar, partially hidden by a velvety-green curtain. You get to admire the view in a semi-circular, plush couch with a bit more privacy. That beautiful, jungle mural is definitely a plus too.

Skykitchen

Right below the Skybar is Vienna House Andel’s Skykitchen, home to Michelin Star Chef Alexander Koppe and his edible masterpieces. Serving traditional Berlin favourites with an international twist, this restaurant offers the same views as the Skybar, only one floor below and with a 60’s vibe. If you ever felt living like Don Draper for a night, this is the restaurant you’d take your lady to.

For larger groups or if you’re planning on having a business lunch with some colleagues, they also have a chic private area (photo below, right). I think the best business decisions are made with a series of filled-up wine coolers and a grand view of the city as your backdrop.

The Rooms

Of course, I can’t be talking about a hotel without looking through their rooms. I’m nosy like that. 😉 Vienna House Andel’s has over 500 rooms. You also get the major things you need. Things like high-speed wifi, satellite TV, and air conditioning. Yes, air conditioning is not something all hotels in Europe have. So never book a hotel that doesn’t have it in the summer. This last Berlin summer was pretty brutal.

There’s a modern, minimalist vibe in the rooms with touches of bright yellow giving it a fun, sunny twist. Rooms are spacious with desks to ensure you have a place to do some quick typing or writing if needed. Bathrooms are also big with separate showers and bathtub areas. I love how they’re not cramped and have windows that let enough sunlight come in.

One thing I love about hotels in Germany is how they give guests two blankets and Vienna House Andel’s sticks to this local custom. It’s one of the best things about German hotels, in my opinion, and it definitely saves couples a fight or two.

Suites, as photographed below, offer more space. There’s a living area where you can accommodate guests, an even bigger bathroom, and some even have a walk-in closet. The suites are also next to smaller rooms and have a connecting door through the living space. If you’re staying with family, booking rooms next to each other make it so much more convenient.

SpaSphere

I said the Skybar was my favourite but I guess that will end by September when I come back to review the services in SpaSphere. The hotel has allotted 550 square metres of space for relaxation – something the people of Berlin, and especially its visitors, need after walking through this big, bustling city.

I will save some of the details for a proper review of SpaSphere which will be coming here next month. So do stay tuned for that. In the meantime, however, I should tell you that this space also has a whirlpool, a gym, five treatment rooms, quiet terraces, a relaxation area, and of course – saunas and a steam bath.

Event Venue

Right under the hotel is a massive space for big events such as trade shows or even concerts. It’s flexible and can be turned into almost anything organisers can imagine. They also have meeting rooms and smaller event spaces throughout the building.

More dining options

The hotel’s breakfast hall can accommodate over a thousand people if needed. However, there is also an exclusive lounge area and service for those who are booked in suites. Mavericks, the restaurant on the ground floor, offers a laid-back dining experience by bringing California’s surf vibe and food to Berlin.

Hope you enjoyed this post and found it helpful for your hotel hunting in this sexy city that literally never sleeps (especially on weekends). Oh, and before I forget – the hotel is located right in front of an S-Bahn station and a Tram stop. If you’re travelling for the Internationale Tourismus Börse (ITB) next year or any other trade fair happening at the Berlin Messe, it’s only one direct train ride away. Yep, no switches!
