My current favourite burger here in Berlin has got to be Burgermeister‘s cheese burger. For now, that is. Almost three months in this city and I have only tried few burgers to be honest. But so far, I have to say this joint has my heart and it’s actually popular for a reason.
Not that I’m a burger expert or anything. In fact, I think I’m pretty far from being one. Mainly because I prefer my burgers pretty small and straightforward.
While I won’t say no to a big serving that’s oozing with cheese sauce, bacon, and some extremely posh sounding patty, I usually just need a burger that fits in my hand and is easy enough to eat.
I went to Burgermeister with my friend Kermit and since it was somehow a Berlin institution when it comes to burgers, I figured we should both try it. We’re both new in the city after all.
Sidenote: Burgermeister means mayor in Deutsch!
To be honest, I found the whole ‘former public bathroom’ concept kind of gimmicky. I was a tad scared too since I’m a bit of a reformed germophobe. But I was eager to try this ‘Berliner experience’. It felt like a right of passage at the time.
We went to the branch near the Schlesiches Tor Ubahn station at around five in the afternoon on a Monday. The line was bearable at that time so I can recommend that it’s a goof time to go. People often say that lines here get very long and I actually saw that myself when I passed it recently during lunch hour.
We ordered cheeseburgers which set us back EUR4.80 (USD5.48) each and some cheese fries (EUR3.10, USD3.54).
Tall tables are set up in front with some pipes bent to make pseudo-benches. Not the most comfortable set up but it’s more of a quick-eat type of joint. With all the people waiting for seats, it’s also not advised to linger.
Hope you don’t mind I stole your pictures, Kermit! 😉
The portion is of decent size and was enough to keep me full till late. The patty was juicy and the veggies inside were fresh and had a bit of a crunch. I had a lovely time with my friend while we were surrounded by backpackers and some friendly Berliners. Will definitely be back.
The location is also a good place to start if you’re looking into exploring Kreuzberg. I should write about some adventures we’ve had that day but maybe next time. I’m late for a dinner!
More later.
Love,
Carol
